Electronic
Visualization Laboratory [EVL], School of Art & Design University
of Illinois at Chicago [UIC], Chicago, USA.
(EVL) is a graduate
research laboratory specialized in virtual reality and real-time
interactive computer graphics; it is a joint effort of UIC's College
of Engineering and the School of Art and Design. The partnership
represents one of the oldest formal collaborations between engineering
and art departments in the USA offering graduate, MS, Ph.D. and
MFA degrees. Having received worldwide recognition for developing
the CAVE® and ImmersaDesk® virtual-reality systems, EVL's
current research focuses on tele-immersion; related research interests
include scientific visualization, network performance, new methodologies
for informal science and engineering education, paradigms for information
display, distributed computing, sonification, human/computer interfaces,
every citizen interfaces, and abstract math visualization. |

Franz Fischnaller designed and organized graduate-level seminars,
interdisciplinary program and studio courses within AD508 Advanced
Electronic Visualization and Critique and AD502 - Seminar in
Contemporary Theory - The Arts and Electronic Media: exploring
new forms for Art Making, offered within the graduate curriculum
for the School of Art and Design and Electronic Visualization
Laboratory (EVL) at UIC.
The graduate-level seminars, propose cycles of conferences,
talks and meetings, interdisciplinary research, development
of specific projects and production of creative works, and exhibits
in the field of Arts, Interactive technology, Virtual Reality,
Telepresence, Digital Media, Robotics and Networking. The seminars
also provided multiple opportunities for students to actively
participate and present their work at various art venues in
Chicago, as well as at international festivals and events. This
gave students opportunities to exhibit their works and demonstrate
their artistic concepts.
The series fulfilled UIC's commitment to the integration of
art, culture and design with technology and science, and emphasized
the programs dedication to applying technological investigations
to art, culture and design, along with the integration of scientific/cultural
projects.
The cycle of conferences, talks and meetings, [local and networked]
hosted
experts in diverse areas of specialization, from scientists,
artists, researchers, media experts, and curators, to managers,
authors, producers, writers, journalists, art historians, and
theoricians.
While at UIC, Franz Fischnaller was also responsible for the
creation of the Virtual Reality Facility Lab for the College
of Architecture and the Arts. The lab is available to graduate
students, undergraduates and faculty. The lab provides an autonomous
space suitable for research, production and exhibition, along
with greater access opportunities for the college to collaborate
with advanced VR Centers and institutions around the world on
both a local and remote basis through electronic networking
with other advanced Centers and institutions worldwide.
